Vintage over-the-knee socks, early 1900, hand-knitted, made of silk and cotton wool thread.

The accessory for a vintage look, an indispensable part of underwear sets beginning of the XX century. Socks’ quality and texture varied depending on the owner’s social status. They could be made of wool, cotton or silk, over the knee or thigh high and sometimes embroidered with a little detail on the foot or the ankle (the only visible parts when a lady sat down!).

The fine, subtle silk texture of this piece makes us suppose it belonged to a lady from the upper-middle class, who looked for a chic but sober kind of style. Found in the Marche region (Center Italy), these socks come in an elegant gray shade, with traditional heel and tiptoe patches.
