Antique platter by the Società Ceramica Richard, perfect as a collection piece, dated late 1800s.
This dish embodies the ancient European pottery tradition, an historical masterpiece of the sort, considering that it was made long before the fusion between the two companies Richard and Ginori, forming THE Italian pottery and dishware firm.
Willow design was very popular in England at the end of the XVIII century. Its oriental inspired patterns always represented sceneries in blue, brown and white or, sometimes, green and pink were also used in the British area.
The peculiarity of this kind of dishes, made using the transferware technique, was the story told by their design, where images and patterns were specifically created as part of a series, in order to make people want to collect them.
This dish tells the Chinese legend of an unlucky couple. The father of the girl opposed the marriage and killed the two, but the lovers were turned into doves by the Gods, who felt sympathy for them. The iconic elements and the oriental influence have made these dishes very valuable at their time. Even today they’re considered a real keepsake for antique pottery enthusiasts. The mark on the back testifies a precise time of the Richard pottery firm production, the last twenty years of the XIX century.
